Support for Israel Collapsing, Including in the U.S.
by: Harley Schlanger
The convening of the U.N. General Assembly on September 9 offers humanity one more opportunity to put an end to the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people by Israel's radical Zionist extremists. A decisive toughening in world opinion against the Netanyahu regime, which is seen in growing protest demonstrations in European cities, will be voiced by many world leaders in an emergency session on Israel's war crimes, with a move to adopt a "Uniting for Peace" resolution, which empowers the UNGA to act when the Security Council is blocked from action. The U.S., under both Presidents Biden and Trump, has blocked previous efforts to stop the killing by using its veto, providing cover for Netanyahu, while pouring arms into ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and financial support to a weakened Israeli economy.
But growing awareness of the heinous nature of Israel's deliberate starvation policy is undermining support among Americans for Israel. Two recent polls capture this shift. An August 27 Quinnipiac University poll found that 60% of voters oppose continuing military aid for Israel, with half of those polled believing that Israel is committing genocide. An Economist/YouGov survey found that 84% favor an immediate ceasefire, with only 27% expressing support for Netanyahu. Both polls showed overwhelming opposition to continued support from younger voters, with Republican youth moving in recent months from 35% unfavorable rating for Netanyahu to 50%.
This shift appears to be breaking the stranglehold over U.S. policy held by the "Zionist Lobby", especially enforced by AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. AIPAC lavishes funds to Congressmen in both parties to support Netanyahu's Greater Israel policy, while accusing any questioning of Israeli policy as anti-Semitism. AIPAC's strength was seen in a February 2024 vote for an additional $14.1 billion military aid for Israel. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders cast the only vote against it.
But a new bill aimed at cutting funding, House Resolution 3565, the Block the Bombs Act, was introduced on June 5, 2025, with 22 cosponsors and a growing number of additional supporters added subsequently. Indicative of this shift is a letter signed by 1,000 American rabbis, calling for increased aid for Gaza. The presence of Jewish youth in American protests has not escaped notice. An op-ed in the Jerusalem Post on August 30 warned that Netanyahu's policy is "alienating Israel's lifeline in Washington." The author, Dan Perry, the former chairman of the Foreign Press Association in Jerusalem, expressed a deeper concern: American Jews, he writes, "worry about children becoming anti-Zionist."
Will this dynamic lead to a change in Donald Trump's so-far unwavering support for Netanyahu? In an interview on September 1 with the pro-MAGA "Daily Caller", the U.S. President acknowledged the decline in power of AIPAC. "Israel was the strongest lobby I’ve ever seen," he said. "They had total control over Congress, and now they don’t...."
The situation within Israel itself is increasingly polarized, with hundreds of thousands in the streets last weekend protesting the Netanyahu regime. The fanatics, led by Ben-Gvir, Smotrich and Katz, continue to call for "total victory", yet the delusion that peace can be achieved by military might deployed to commit mass murder is being questioned, especially by military veterans and intelligence profesionals. A classified IDF document which is circulating within the military concluded that Operation ‘Gideon’s Chariots’ — the army’s name for the major offensive that was launched against Hamas in May and ended last month -- has "failed to meet its core objectives.”
The stage is thus set for the global community to use next week's session of the UNGA to rally around the truthful meaning of "Never Again."
